Guest check terms

Last updated: 20 October 2026

1. What a guest check is

A guest check lets you confirm, without a VU account, that a person in front of you is over 18 or over 21, using their VU ID. It is provided by VU Credentials Ltd (“VU”, “we”).

When you choose what to check, you agree to these terms, for yourself and for the business you are checking for (“you”).

2. What it tells you

That the person's VU ID was read from a passport's chip, that VU checked the passport is genuine, and the answer to what you asked, with their photo for you to compare with their face. It does not tell you who they are, and VU does not give you their name.

It is not a legal scheme. A guest check does not by itself meet a legal requirement to check age or identity, such as for alcohol licensing, right to work or right to rent, unless that requirement accepts it. Your decisions remain yours.

3. How you may use it

Only to check a person who is in front of you, and who agrees to it on their own phone. You must not:

  • record, photograph, screenshot or keep the person's photo or the answer;
  • use a guest check online, remotely, or by any automated means;
  • use what you see to identify, track or contact anyone;
  • refuse someone because they decline, where you would accept another proof;
  • try to get around the limits on guest checks.

4. Personal data

You see the answer and the photo for a short time, and you are responsible for what you do with them. VU keeps neither after the check ends. Our Privacy Policy explains how VU handles the person's data.

5. Limits and availability

VU limits how many guest checks one network may make in a day, and may change or withdraw guest checks at any time. To check customers regularly, or to ask more, such as who a customer is, apply for a business account, whose checks follow our Terms of Service.

6. Liability

Guest checks are free, and provided with reasonable skill and care, and otherwise as they are. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Otherwise, VU's total liability to you for guest checks is £100.

7. Law and contact

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, whose courts have exclusive jurisdiction. Questions: legal@vucredentials.com.
