Check anyone with a chip passport, from anywhere

VU reads the chip in a passport, checks the issuing government's signature on it, and matches a live face to the chip's photo. The person keeps the result as VU Verified, so nobody has to check them again.

How it works

Nothing to upload: the phone reads the passport itself.

  1. 1

    They tap their passport

The person holds their passport to their phone, in your app or in the VU app.

  2. 2

    VU checks the government's signature

The data on the chip is signed by the country that issued the passport. VU checks that signature, so a forged or altered passport fails.

  3. 3

    A live face is matched

A short selfie video shows a real person is there, and VU matches their face to the photo on the chip.

  4. 4

    They carry the result

VU Verified lands in their wallet. From then on they share one fact at a time, such as "over 18", with a tap or a QR code.

Two ways to use it

Early access

Way 2

In your app

Our app kit adds the passport check to your own app. VU decides the result on its server and tells you; the app kit holds no secret and decides nothing. Flutter on Android today, iPhone next.

Way 3

In the VU app

People check once in the VU app, free and with no sign-up. It's on Android, and isn't in app stores yet. At a counter, your staff then see that they are over 18, or who they are, with a tap.

What VU keeps

Proofs, not data

Here VU checks the passport itself, so it holds itself to keeping as little as it can.

No passport contents

VU keeps proofs that a check happened, not the data it read.

No face images

Face images are deleted as soon as the check is decided.

Sanctions screening at each check

People are screened against UK, EU and US sanctions lists at the moment of each check. Nothing is kept, except while a possible match is reviewed.

The person decides

Nothing is shared until they approve, and a business sees only the fact it asked for.

Where it stands

Early access
  • The passport check works end to end on Android, tested on real phones.
  • Requests are open now, and we will open it to businesses a few at a time. iPhone is next.
  • VU is not yet certified as a UK digital identity provider, so UK firms regulated for money laundering should keep their own provider for now.
  • Early access is free.
